Highly recommended! A beautifully illustrated text for all types of readers. It includes pertinent architecturally historic perspectives for students, scholars and travelers, plus wonderful additional resources for those looking for places to see that are often missed by the usual guide books or guides themselves. Websites and further detail for visiting several discussed sites around Rome were a wonderful additional feature.Written by two scholars who have examined their decades of experience to share a present day perspective on a historically significant architectural text. You may or may not know of the text they discuss, but you don't need to and by the end you'll be coming back to order it too. I look forward to my upcoming months in Rome even more after having read this.
I thought this was a neat book. I was in Architecture Venturi's book came out and was the rage. I have to say I was never taken by it. I thought this book was better then his and really enjoyed it.
This is first and foremost a book of a love of a city and its architecture. Beautifully illustrated in water color, well organized and easy to follow. It gave us a new appreciation and perspective of a city we've visited several times. Very highly recommended if you're going to Rome or love architecture.
“This guide is intended for all travellers to Rome, whether of the armchair or shoe leather variety, and whether the traveler is novitiate or veteranâ€Robert Venturi wrote Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture in 1962, at the age of 37 when he was spending two years at the American Academy in the city, gleaning all he could about the city of such rich and diverse architectural styles, both complex and contradictory. Both authors studied his seminal work when they were students. In the original, Venturi illustrated his book with black and white photos, but in this volume by Fisher and Harby there are beautiful watercolours that bring magic to the pages, a deft and light hand.When Venturi was in the city, the buildings were largely covered in grime and soot and his photos capture that two dimensionality. Now, when many buildings have undergone cleaning and renovation, a lighter medium is ideal to capture the light and the innate dancing of light that is present in the city. Watercolour is ideal to bring to life the light and shade, that chiaroscuro. Thus, Stephen Harby shares his watercolours as they describe selected buildings around the city, some well-known like the Pantheon, the Vatican.. to Luigi Moretti’s more stark and linear post World War II apartment building, Casa Girasoli, in Parioli, which I would now choose to visit when I am next in Rome. Porta Pia by Michelangelo would also be on my list.This is such a diverse and wonderful selection of buildings dotted around the city, all beautifully brought to life. If I had one niggle it would be the format of presentation – a book slightly larger than A5 size and in order to access some of the double page illustrations, you would have to crack the spine (sacrilege in our house!). But wonderful to be able to slip it into your bag as you tour the city.
Robert Venturi's Rome is a new book that revisits Robert Venturi's book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture on its 50th anniversary.The new book by Frederick Fisher and Stephen Harby, both Fellows of the American Academy in Rom, reconsiders Complexity and Contradiction in the form of a guidebook to Rome, and forms a rich framework for re-engaging. Chapter by chapter, the authors revisit key buildings that Venturi cites. With each, they include a piece of Venturi's original text, interpret the text and describe the building. And each building is illustrated with a monochrome watercolor painting. The watercolors are meant to translate the complex buildings into form, mass, space and light. This interpretive method, while sensual in its own right, allows the narrative/reader to focus on the most compelling aspects of each building.It's hard to underestimate how impactful Complexity and Contradiction can be for young architecture students. For decades students were given Le Corbusier's Towards a New Architecture and Colin Rowe's Mathematics of the ideal Villa as a college freshman.So it was unsettling for freshly minted modernist converts to confront Complexity and Contradiction. It was both revelation and heresy, a graduate-student level text for top thinkers. But it allows young designers to think about the pleasures or architectural languages, and how they can be manipulated to communicate, to tell stories and create narratives. Like the mature languages that were at the disposal of Michelangelo, Palladio, John Soane, Edwin Lutyens, Paul Rudolph and Anthony Ames. For those designers who are John Hedjuk's "continuators", Venturi suggests a rich path for the creative practice.This book is not an essential scholarly text. Rather, it's an indulgence, a work of thoughtfulness and beauty for the library of anyone keen on Rome, Robert Venturi, or the art of watercolor sketching.
